As an integral part of a college preparatory Catholic high school, the Lourdes Science Department passionately believes that science provides an essential path to understanding and appreciating both God’s creation of and humanity’s responsibility for its care-taking. As God’s appointed stewards of His creation (Genesis 2:15), we find it vital that all students become science literate regardless of interest or post-high school plans.
Learning science at Lourdes High School is an active process, offering all students the opportunity to learn major science concepts through a variety of laboratory and problem-solving techniques. This innovative, “hands on” instruction engages students in critical and higher order thinking skills. Furthermore, science education at Lourdes High School helps students grasp the very human nature of science by viewing both science and technology from historical, personal, social, and spiritual perspectives.
Science Department Curriculum Summary
By focusing on key scientific concepts, fundamental science process skills, practical laboratory experiences and the nature of scientific inquiry, our science courses work in harmony to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. Each course builds upon the previous course to promote deep levels of understanding and scientific reasoning.
LHS is proud to offer Project Lead the Way (PLTW) courses. PLTW is the nation’s premier provider of science, technology, engineering, and math learning curriculum--often called STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). Utilizing PLTW, students are able to take both engineering and biomedical science courses. These innovative, hands-on, project-based classes take our students from the understanding of scientific concepts to the application of these concepts to real world problems.
