Junior High Jazz Band

Adding to the musical experiences of our St. John the Evangelist/St. Pius X Junior High students is the option to participate in the RCS Junior High Jazz Band. This group welcomes students in grades 7 and 8 to a dynamic jazz ensemble. Musically, students will perform pieces by jazz composers, and gain experience in improvisation and advanced rhythmic techniques. Socially, students build a strong network of friends from across our three grade schools (St. John the Evangelist/St. Pius X School, St. Francis of Assisi School, Holy Spirit Catholic School).

To participate in the RCS Junior High Jazz Band, a student must be a member of an RCS school band program. Auditions are required for students who play percussion, keyboard, or guitar. For students playing saxophone, trombone or trumpet, no audition is required. Major performances include a Rochester Catholic Schools Spring Tour, two system-wide band concerts, and the Lourdes Night of Jazz event.

The RCS Junior High Jazz Band meets at the St. John the Evangelist campus at 7:00 a.m. with regular rehearsal running from 7:15-8:15 a.m. Rehearsal will conclude in time for the start of the normal school day.

If you are a student that has interest in participating in Junior High Jazz Band, please contact Mr. Mark Scheitel at

Adding to the theatrical experiences at St. John the Evangelist/St. Pius X School, all students are invited to share their creative and unique talents in our annual school musical/play. Audition times, rehearsal schedules and performance dates will be posted on this site throughout the year. Although auditions are held for individual parts, virtually every student who has interest in participating is given an opportunity. St. John the Evangelist/St. Pius X School theater is a beautiful activity for our students to express themselves in character portrayal on stage or in technical or prop support behind the scenes!

If you are a student that is interested in participating in St. John the Evangelist/St. Pius X School Theater, we are excited to visit with you! Please contact Mrs. Sherman at

Young Authors, Young Artists

"Young Authors, Young Artists" is an annual conference offered by the local arts community to St. John the Evangelist/St. Pius X School for students in grades 4-6 to promote enthusiasm and competence in written and verbal communication. This inspiring gathering gives students the opportunity to learn from and work with authors, poets, illustrators, artists, journalists, and book crafters. Students will participate in sessions to gain artistic vision as well as to share in the joy of writing and creating. Registration takes place in early spring with the conference held in May at Heintz Center in Rochester.
